Septic Aerobic Treatment Units – Did you Know

The United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, Aerobic treatment units (ATUs) use nearly the same process as large municipal sewage plants, just on a smaller scale. ATUs produce cleaner, clearer effluent than traditional septic tanks, thereby reducing environmental impacts and potential health hazards. There are two types of ATUs, each delivering higher levels of sewage treatment. The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) produces standards, and third-party testing for aerobic treatment units for septic systems. Standards 40 and 245 are the most widely recognized types of residential ATUs. Treated waste water meeting standard 40 must demonstrate significant reductions in total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and improved PH. Standard 245 requires a minimum of 50% reduction in nitrogen and further improvements in TDS and BOD.

Aerobic treatment units are required with all advanced septic system design such as high-pressure drip systems. Depending on local county standards, systems using an evaporative lagoon may also require an ATU in lieu of a traditional septic tank. 

The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) Section 504 program provides loans and grants for single family housing repair, or to remove health and safety hazards to an existing home. The program may be used to replace or modernize existing onsite waste water systems including aerobic treatment units.
