Septic Laterals – Did you Know

There are various types of septic lateral drain fields. The most type consists of 4-inch perforated pipe buried in clean aggregate wrapped in a geotextile product. Effluent from either a septic tank, or aerobic treatment unit flow through the lateral pipes for distribution into the drain field. Once effluent enters the ground, soil provides final treatment removing most bacteria and viruses. Alternative lateral field designs replace perforated pipes for either plastic chambers or small pressurized lines, known as Low Pressure Pipe (LPP). The United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found chamber type gravelless drain fields have been so widely used over the previous decades, that in many states, the system is now considered a conventional lateral option.  

The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) Section 504 program provides loans and grants for single family housing repair, to include remediating health and safety hazards to an existing home. The program may be used to replace or modernize an existing OWTS system including septic lateral drain fields.
