Septic Soil Testing – Did you Know

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) more than one in five homes in the U.S., approximately 60 million Americans, rely on septic tanks or private onsite waste water systems. Today, nearly one-third of new home developments are served by septic or decentralizes treatment systems. When properly sized, and correctly installed, septic systems substantially reduce energy consumption by relying on gravity and onsite soils to complete effluent treatment. A key benefit for homeowners is in eliminating one monthly utility bill. 

A septic tank combined with a conventional lateral drain field, either PVC pipe buried in gravel or plastic chambers buried under ground, is the most basic type of OWTS system. The septic tank provides primary treatment of waste water by separating solids and particulates from liquid ensuring only pre-treated clarified effluent enters the soil.

The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers Section 504 single family housing repair loans and grants to make improvements, or remove health and safety hazards to an existing home. This program may be used to replace or modernize existing onsite waste water systems including septic tanks.
