Advanced Septic Systems – Did you Know

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published research on climate challenges to onsite wastewater treatment systems. The climate assessment conducted by the U.S. Global Change Research Program anticipates climate change will impact the United States through an increase in the frequency, and severity, of extreme weather events. The trend will be for more heat waves which affect shallow ground temperatures, and increased rain events and downpours which will affect water tables and soil moisture. To combat anticipated climate change and corresponding soil conditions, the EPA recommends implementation of adaption and mitigation strategies for septic systems, including both better soil moisture management, and soil nutrient loading. To better manage effluent flow into the soil, research recommendations include installing lateral drain fields at more shallow depths, use flow equalization devices and timed dosing. Aerobic treatment units equipped to reduce nitrogen loading of soil will decrease nutrient loading into the soil. High-pressure drip septic systems paired with an advanced NSF 245 aerobic treatment unit achieves all EPA recommendations to harden onsite wastewater treatment systems for anticipated changes to climate and soils. Further, high-pressure OWTS systems provide clients options when soil conditions are particularly difficult such as high clay content or shallow restrictive layers. Advanced systems are capable of being installed in the worst soil conditions when other septic systems will fail.

The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) developed a financing program to assist rural homeowners. The Section 504 program provides loans and grants for single family housing repair, including removing health and safety hazards to an existing home. The program may be used to replace or modernize an existing onsite wastewater treatment system including aerobic treatment units, pump stations, and high-pressure drip lines.
